Life By Design, a feature-length documentary, tells the story of Danish design and how it evolved from the “Golden Age” of the 1950s and 1960s through the present day, while still remaining true to its core characteristics of authenticity, soundness and quality. The film utilizes rare archival film footage of Hans Wegner, Poul Kjaerholm and Arne Jacobsen, the first generation of Danish designers to combine traditional craftsmanship with the Modernist shapes and ideas that were sweeping across Europe in the aftermath of the Second World War. It traces the rise of “Danish Modern” in the United States (including the chair that JFK made famous), its subsequent fall and the resurgence of interest sparked by the use of Danish pieces to furnish the freshly renovated Museum of Modern Art in 2004. Concluding the film are members of the exciting new generation of Danish designers who are striving to find the balance between maintaining their identity as Danish designers, while also participating in the global design community.
The story of how this design aesthetic developed and how it spread beyond Denmark’s borders has not been told previously. Life by Design not only provides this history, but also provides personal perspectives from those who were a major part of this design revolution. Although Danish design has now become recognizable across the globe and produced iconic masterpieces, the rise of new materials, new technology, and the effects of a global marketplace are creating pressures and challenges on a new generation of Danish designers and manufacturers. Danish design also presents a philosophy and way of life that is antithetical to today’s throwaway consumer culture: high quality materials that are built to last for generations and designs that are unadorned and organic. Ultimately, the story of Danish design is an evolving one that seeks to strike a balance between timeless design and an ever-changing global society.
